Great for the field and groups

I love this instrument to indirectly view the Sun out in the field with small groups, particularly children, but all ages can enjoy. All of the fancy lenses and telescopes that modern astronomers and photographers use can quickly overpower the layman, and this simple device allows a safe and easy experience of solar events like eclipses and occultations. I'm excited to use my SolarScope in Kentucky in 2017's Great American Eclipse. See you in totality! :)

I bought one of these years ago in preparation for a transit of Venus. It took a beating over the years, as I used it at many outreach events in schools. I bought this wooden traveler version and could not be happier. (1) I love the appearance. So much better than the simple pressed wood from years ago. Much more attractive and more durable. (2) While one might want to use glue for a permanent setting of the pieces, I love the latches. It is not necessary for traveling across town, but helpful for traveling on a plane for an eclipse. (3) I like being able to take this apart - not so much for travel but for storage. This is a telescope I don't use every day, and the older one was always in the way. (4) The quality of the sun's image is every bit as good as my old Solarscope. (5) I have found it helpful to have this on a high table, especially at mid day, so that adults as well as kids can see the image area. (6) For those working with kids, children do not have to have the ability to look through an eyepiece - something that younger children may not be able to do. (7) The staff was incredibly helpful and responsive with my questions.
